Rhude Fall 2022 Menswear

Rhuigi Villaseñor had been planning to show his fall 2022 collection in Paris—“ultra big” he said about the original scheme. Omicron put a damper on those plans, but things have a way of working out for Villaseñor. The day before he presented this collection virtually he was named the new creative director of Bally, the Swiss luxury house. His Bally vision, he ensures, will be markedly different from his Rhude one—a good thing because his Rhude imprint is growing impressively strong.

Fall 2022 is titled “Bull Market,” the latest ripple in Villaseñor’s ongoing exploration of nouveau luxury. Swanky ’80s stockbrokers in suspenders channeling Gordon Gekko were a starting point, though as a young designer with big dreams Villaseñor knows better than to be overtly nostalgic. “I was thinking about the modern Wall Street, young investors, kids being aware of their finances,” he said. While other designers are spending time making NFTs and meta-fashion statements, Villaseñor is skipping the techy experimentation phase and prioritizing becoming the go-to clothier for this new breed of techno-art investor.

He’s doing it with classically cut suits that emphasize comfort. Los Angeles-based tailor Denis Frison, famed for dressing Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt, has engineered the silhouettes, and Villaseñor and his friends have wear-tested them for both ease and panache. “Comfort and mobility is the key to the new way of working,” he proclaimed of his result, and he makes a strong case for a devilishly slick suit with a cozy twist.

Highbrow sweats, sweaters, and tracksuits are continuations, ditto the leather Formula 1-inspired kits. The racing motif is one Villaseñor will be devoted to no matter which car he’s driving (today it was a Range Rover) or collaborating with. “Looking at other luxury brands, you see repetition is important,” he said. After several laps around the track, Villaseñor is crossing the finish line into the major leagues. Let’s hope it doesn’t change up his winning formula here at Rhude too much.
